The Truth About Draino

Updated: Feb 21, 2023

It's well marketed, quick, easy and sometimes it actually works! The truth is, while products such as Drano and Liquid Plumber do have their places, if not used carefully and correctly, they can actually end up causing more damage than good.

Here are 3 reasons why you should not use products like Drano.

Chemicals Are Bad For Toilets

Chemicals used to unclog a toilet may end up helping, but using them is a huge risk. Anything that goes into a toilet bowl, including chemicals designed to get rid of clogs, will end up staying there for a while. When the chemicals in products such as Drano sit in a toilet, they can actually settle onto the porcelain and begin to heat up as they sit there. This can lead to cracks in the toilet bowl or even explosions in some instances.

Since replacing a cracked toilet or cleaning up after an explosion in the bathroom are both much more expensive than what Alba Plumbing would charge to unclog your toilet, we suggest you skip the Drano, avoid the risk and simply give us a call.

They Are Hard on Pipes

Over the counter drain clog removers have actually been used successfully in many instances, including getting rid of bad clogs in showers and sinks in the bathroom. The bad news is, the chemical agents found in these products have a tendency to wreak havoc on the plumbing pipes. Plastic piping is especially susceptible to corrosion from these chemicals. Drano or Liquid Plumber can even damage metal pipes in the long run.

If you find yourself facing the same clog in the same place over and over again, avoid using Drano each time. Too many uses will lead to trouble. Instead, give Alba Plumbing a call and let’s get it fixed the right way.

Drano Is Just a Band Aid Fix

Using Drano once to clear a clogged sink is really not that big of a deal. A one time use will probably not do too much damage to the sink or the pipes underneath and can be a simple solution to your problem. However, if you are noticing clogs in the same general area over and over again, chances are there is a bigger problem. Sure, you might be able to temporarily fix the issue with Drano. But to truly address the situation, give us a call.
